Abstract: The OpenMP Architecture Review Board (ARB) releases new versions of OpenMP every two to three years. This year, between releases, we will share headline features planned for the OpenMP API version 6.1 ahead of its release before SC26. Feature champions from the OpenMP ARB and Language Committee will highlight OpenMP features in development, and attendees can provide their input on the standard ahead of the release. The BoF will have short lightning talks, and discussion rounds will give participants ample opportunity to interact with OpenMP experts, ask questions, and provide feedback. Vendor representatives will discuss support and timelines for OpenMP features.
Long Description: The OpenMP API is among the most widely used and important parallel programming models in HPC and is the oldest industry standard for parallel programming with compiler directives. Shortly before SC24, the OpenMP Architecture Review Board released version 6.0 of the OpenMP API specification and is currently working on version 6.1, which will be released before SC26. The OpenMP ARB will release Technical Report 14 with the first preview of OpenMP version 6.1 at shortly before SC25.
SC25 therefore will be the ideal venue to report out on the progress made and to solicit feedback from the community on the headline features planned for version 6.1 at the mid-point of its development cycle. As in previous years, the OpenMP BOF will inform the audience about trends, implementations, and best practices while providing an interactive discussion for beginners and experts alike. The session is split into two conceptual parts, each concluding with a lively open-floor discussion as in previous years.
In the first part, Feature Champions from the OpenMP ARB and Language Committee with give lightening talks sharing details about the headline features in development targeting OpenMP version 6.1. These features are planned to be OpenMP for Middleware, a new OpenMP kernel language, and further developments to task graphs. We also plan to share other highlights of work in progress towards version 6.1 from the Language Committee, including a first outlook of planned features and extensions for the OpenMP API version 7.0. Attendees will get an understanding of the problems these new features aim to solve along with the new prototype API before a Q&A round with the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback on these features.
In the second part, OpenMP implementers will report in a lightning round the status and implementation plans for the OpenMP API versions up to 6.0; a vital informative feature so OpenMP users know where and when they can access features through the various tool chains. Vendors will remain for a quick Q&A round to respond to feature requests and timelines from the attendees.
The BOF will, as in previous years, end with an open floor discussion that invites everyone to provide feedback or ask questions about the OpenMP API, not necessarily limited to the topics featured before. The presentation and Q&A time is balanced such that there will ample time and opportunity for the attendees to interact with the ARB and vendor representatives present in the session.
