Where Could Europe Add Value? ETP4HPC (The European HPC Technology Platform) Showcases Collaboration Opportunities Involving Next-Generation European Technology

Authors: Sai Narasimhamurthy (ETP4HPC; ParTec AG, Germany), Hans-Christian Hoppe (Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC); ParTec AG, Germany), Osman Ünsal (Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC)), Etienne Walter (Atos/Bull)

Abstract: Thanks to the stream of funding provided by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, Europe is ready to build its next-generation, world-class HPC and AI systems.

Its project portfolio offers solutions that pave the way towards global leadership and collaboration opportunities in the following complementary areas: DARE and EPI projects – HPC/AI processor development, NET4EXA – high-speed interconnects, and SEANERGYS – dynamic, energy-optimized operation.

Project representatives will showcase their results in order to identify related efforts and technologies overseas (U.S., Asia, Japan, India, other regions). The outcomes will be documented in an ETP4HPC white paper on international collaboration.

Long Description: Europe is home to a vibrant ecosystem of leading-edge HPC and AI sites and supercomputer technology development. Cutting-edge, globally competitive technologies are becoming mature and ready to partner with international efforts in their respective areas.

The European HPC Technology Platform (ETP4HPC) includes more than 100 private and public partners active across all HPC and AI fields, from devices to applications. It acts both as a think-tank and lobby group that prepares the European HPC and AI roadmap, based on the expertise of its members, and supports hardware and software projects to maximise their potential.

This BoF, led by ETP4HPC, focuses on four key ongoing activities from the European public-funded projects:

- DARE (Digital Autonomy with RISC-V in Europe) develops cutting-edge HPC/AI processors and software based on the RISC-V open instruction set architecture; its vector processor, AI inference accelerator and high-end server processor are poised to power post-Exascale HPC and AI systems.

- The European Processor Initiative (EPI) develops an ARM-based HPC/AI processor and several accelerators; it is a cornerstone of the European initiative towards strategic for HPC and AI.

- NET4EXA is creating an advanced interconnect for HPC and AI systems with optimisations for to Large Language Models, which will scale to hundreds of thousands of computing nodes.

- SEANERGYS develops an integrated next-generation software solution to improve the energy-efficient operation of HPC and AI supercomputers. The software will use advanced AI techniques to balance the performance and time-to-result of workloads against energy use.

This BoF will cover three questions:

- First, it will discuss key planned outcomes and what lessons have already been learnt in the process of planning and developing these technologies. - Secondly, it will attempt to determine the best ways to leverage the synergies these technologies create at a global level to benefit the world-wide HPC and AI ecosystem, and the collaborative mechanisms that would best advance such work. - Thirdly, the session will brainstorm on which specific ongoing global projects could enter a mutually beneficial collaboration with these technologies as they are developed in Europe.
