Sparking Student Impact — The Evolution of IndySCC

indyscc

If you’ve ever dreamed of putting your computing skills to the test in a high-stakes, fast-paced competition, then the IndySCC is your kind of challenge! Now in its fourth year, the IndySCC is a one-of-a-kind competition designed to immerse students in the world of high-performance computing (HPC) using cloud-based resources. What started as a stepping stone to the Student Cluster Competition (SCC) has now grown into a global event where teams from around the world go head-to-head in a non-stop 48-hour showdown!

SC24 Recap: Taking It to the Next Level

SC24 marked a huge milestone for IndySCC, as teams were given the opportunity to compete both remotely and in person. Out of the 19 teams that participated, nine brought their energy straight to the show floor in Atlanta! This on-site presence added a dynamic element to the competition, creating an environment where students could collaborate, troubleshoot, and problem-solve in real time.

One of the highlights from SC24 was the introduction of fully-funded travel and lodging for two selected teams. The California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) team was one of the first recipients of this funding, making their SC debut with an experience that helped broaden their horizons and welcomed them to the HPC community. This initiative will continue into SC25, opening doors for more students to engage with HPC on an even larger scale.

Meet the SC24 IndySCC Champions

The competition was fierce, but two teams emerged victorious in their respective categories:

Team UKSCC

United Kingdom (University of Bristol, Durham University,
University of Exeter, and University of Warwick)

Team Kent Ridge

National University of Singapore

For Team UKSCC, IndySCC was more than just a competition — it was a game-changer. Advisor Joseph Moore shared that the goal was to introduce students to HPC as a potential career path, and it worked! Team members Jane Manning and Alex Do found themselves captivated by the field, while Toby Davis reflected on the excitement of working with real-world applications, particularly the ICON climate and weather simulation. “It was cool to see our work having a real-world purpose!” he said.

A huge shoutout goes to Indiana University’s Jetstream2 platform, which provided the cloud computing resources for SC24. Thanks to allocations from the NSF ACCESS program, teams had the chance to dive deep into Jetstream2, learning how to optimize benchmarks and tackle complex scientific computing challenges. The result? Hands-on experience that will serve these students well as they step into the world of HPC and beyond.
