SCinet Gang Gathers Again in Preparation for SC25

SCinet volunteers

In early March, the SCinet gang reunited — some of us meeting in person for the first time since the SC24 teardown in November. Handshakes and hugs were exchanged before we rolled up our sleeves and got down to business: planning SC25 in St. Louis.

A Trip Underground to “Circuit City”

Every year, SC pushes the boundaries of what can be achieved within our technical space, and finding venues that can meet the demands of the conference is a challenge in itself. This year, the SC conference will convene at America’s Center, a sprawling 574,000-square-foot facility located in the heart of downtown St. Louis, set to host all aspects of the SC25 conference this November.

One of the highlights of our site visit was a trip through the underground tunnels that connect the convention center halls. The SCinet team had the opportunity to take a closer look at the logistical backbone of SC25, which will be right under our attendees’ feet, and gain valuable insight into how everything comes together — from power and connectivity to security and equipment transport. The most exciting element of our underground tour was our visit to “Circuit City,” the hub of the site’s telecommunications network. Seeing the physical infrastructure firsthand gave SCinet’s team leaders a clearer vision of how to bring their plans to life as they take the next steps in integrating the world’s fastest temporary network into the venue.

As we toured the rest of the conference center, we identified key areas for major conference components, including the Student Cluster Competition and the theatre for the Innovating the Network for Data-Intensive Science (INDIS) workshop. With every step, we began the process of piecing together the monumental puzzle that is SCinet.

A critical part of the March meeting was solidifying our leadership team. SCinet proudly welcomed Matt Zekauskas as our new Vice Chair, a role that fully recognizes the value of Matt’s leadership and expertise. Another top priority was finalizing the team rosters. It’s no easy feat building the world’s fastest, most advanced temporary network every year; having teams with varied experiences and expertise is vital to SCinet’s (and SC’s) success. Team leads were tasked with locking in their members, with one of the benefits of this process being our incredible SCinet community — whose networking numbers meant that gaps could easily be filled thanks to our well-connected team. Thanks to our small but mighty group, we’re now well on the way to onboarding this year’s latest lineup of talent.

Reimagining the Architecture Diagram

For anyone involved with the SC Committee and SCinet, it should be no surprise that the architecture diagram can be a source of pride. Contributors who have generously donated volunteers, services, or equipment take time to find their corporate logo and appreciate their brand exposure. However, the architecture diagram might be confusing, overwhelming, and of little interest to the average attendee. As part of a forthcoming SCinet “Art of HPC” project, team discussions focused on making the diagram more interactive and accessible, ensuring it effectively communicates network architecture to contributors, stakeholders, and attendees alike.

INDIS, NRE, and Clusters, Oh my!

What is high performance computing if it’s not centered around science? This meeting also focused the SCinet team’s efforts on the logistical challenges of powering workshops, demonstrations, and live cluster competitions that make SC such a dynamic event. Key components such as power, equipment, and community engagement were flagged for continued discussion in the coming months.

the road to sc25

Planning SCinet is a marathon, not a sprint. Each year brings fresh challenges, requiring the team to analyze past successes and setbacks to refine and improve our approach. At the March meeting, teams shared reports on key hurdles and began developing solutions together. What remains constant is the incredible sense of teamwork and dedication that defines SCinet — proof that collaboration and expertise can turn ambitious goals into reality.

As we move forward, we’re excited to continue refining plans, solving challenges, and preparing for another groundbreaking SCinet deployment.

We look forward to seeing everyone in the coming months!
