Ten Years Attending, First Time Volunteering

Samar under arch

I first attended SC in 2011, returned in 2017, and this year I took my first official step into volunteering directly with the SC conference. Here’s my story—and why you should consider joining the SC volunteer community in 2026.

At SC25, I served as a Technical Program Communication Liaison, contributing news and articles across the Technical Program before being invited to attend the conference and share my experience in person. One of my first stops was picking up my 10-Year SC Token—a moment that reminded me how much this community has become a professional home.

Building Communities

Samar and team

I’ve always been committed to the supercomputing community. Long before joining the SC volunteer team, I led a successful Birds of a Feather session in 2017 that helped launch two initiatives at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST): the Parallel FFT Community and the Data Center Benchmarking Community. Beyond SC, I’ve attended nearly 60 international HPC conferences and worked with major systems including Fugaku, MareNostrum, JUWELS/JURECA, Mira, and KAUST’s Shaheen I–III.

Today, I’m completing an MBI in AI with the University of Cumbria and leading the Quantum Computing Reading Group, bridging HPC and quantum technologies. Volunteering with the SC Communications team allowed me to bring that passion into my writing and contribute directly to one of the largest HPC communities in the world.

Beyond Volunteering

Quantum Computing & Sharing My Story

Outside my volunteer work, a highlight of SC25 was speaking on the panel Igniting the Future: Empowering Underrepresented Talent in HPC, AI, and Quantum Computing.

Moderated by Prof. David Keyes, the discussion gathered voices dedicated to expanding inclusion in advanced computing. I shared my journey from applied mathematics to HPC and quantum computing, along with perspectives on supporting women and underrepresented talent in our fields.

A Community That Feels Like HOme

Reconnecting with colleagues from around the world reminded me why I return year after year. SC has shaped my professional path, continually opening doors and communities.

HPC laid the foundation of my career—and quantum computing is the future I’m helping build.
